The First Bike

A year after we took our first road trip together, we were given the opportunity of going away with some friends to the South of France for a fortnight. We jumped at the chance to spend some time in the sun, by the beach with friends, but we also knew we would want a few days on our own as well, and that they would probably like the space from us as well, so we decided we would rent a motorbike for a few days on this trip.

This holiday started with all the boys driving to Le Mans 24 hour race (see a theme here?) and then driving on down to Southern France at the end of the weekend. The girls flew out to meet the boys on the Monday morning. We were staying in a place called Valras-Plage on a lovely campsite that is only a 5 minute walk from the beach and a bar on the beach. What a win! There was good food on site, a bakery with fresh-baked baguettes and croissants every morning and afternoon, a wine shop, bars, and a pool as well. All in all, a pretty great site and only about a 15-20 minute walk from the town.

We took a day trip out with our friends to Carcassone which is an entire town within the walls of a medieval castle. It really is a stunning way to spend the day, and people really live within the walls of this castle, and there's plenty of shops and restaurants again.

After about a week with our friends, we arranged to take a train to Marseille, just me and him, where we would be picking up the motorbike we were hiring for a few days of further exploration. I had never been on a motorbike, and Paul hadn't ridden for a couple of years, so it was certainly going to be an experience! We hired a BMW 1200 RT from Road2Luxe and hit the roads, planning to build on our tour of the Alps from the previous year.

We started by heading to Nice, as we were meeting some of Paul's family there who were over in Europe from Australia - they had come all that distance, it seemed rude for us not to drive the couple of hours to see them! I quickly got to grips with being a passenger on a bike.

After we were done in Nice we headed off into the mountains to see some more of the Alps. There were some truly stunning sites over the next few days and we spent a lot of time stopping to take more pictures. Here's a couple of my favourites from those few days; annoyingly I can't remember half the places we stopped now, but as we hit the more recent there'll be loads more information to share and show - this is just to give you an idea of things we've done and a handful of the places we've seen!
