Staying on Top of the World

The fourth stop of our Swiss road trip saw us heading towards the famous town of Grindelwald, a place famous for it's snowy views being synonmous with the perfect Christmas card image. There wasn't much snow around for us as we were there in June, but when we reached our hotel, there was still some snow lingering! Our hotel for the night was Berghaus Männlichen. The reason we had picked here? Well, it's located at the top of a mountain, 2225m above sea level to be exact, and only accessible by gondola (or a very long hike up the mountain if you're fit and into that - we didn't fancy it!). After sorting the car and grabbing what we needed for the night, we headed off to the gondola and made our way up the mountain. It took about half hour to get to the top and the views as we headed up were stunning. It was a bizarre sensation for me as I had never been in a gondola before, and did not expect to be shot out of the station at the beginning and half way up. The spe...

Arise in Arosa

Day four of our Switzerland road trip saw us leaving the stunning surroundings of Glarus and heading further into the country to experience Arosa. We only had one night booked it here and it was a fair old drive out to the hotel. There was lots of winding roads that we had to drive round which offered some truly stunning views, but were a bit of a nightmare for me as some one who gets travel sick very easily. Thankfully there were lots of lay-bys we could pull into for me to get out and stretch my legs and get over each wave of sickness. In Arosa we had booked the night in Hotel Stoffel . It was a stunning hotel that used to be a girls boarding school. The owners were very welcoming and advised us of a route to walk to get a cable car to up the mountain top nearby. It was a short by stunning hike that probably took us about 20 minutes. It would have been quicker if it hadn't been so steep, and we were also trying to avoid the cows that were following us in places on the mountain ...

Wow. Wow. Wow.

After having rested up from our first day of travelling, we left our hotel/castle in France and started the 5 hour drive to our next location. Within a couple of hours we were over the border and officially in Switzerland. 5 hours after leaving France we arrived in Klöntal Valley, Glarus. Having followed a winding road through the trees, we were greeted by a stunning lake backed by mountains. All we could do was stop and say "Wow". And that word got dropped several more times in the couple of days we had here. We were lucky enough to find that our chosen hotel, Hotel Rhodannenburg, sat on the lakefront. It was an 18th century farmhouse that was converted into a hotel in 1975. The lovely couple that converted it still own it now, and we were lucky enough to get to speak to them a fair bit during our stay. For the first night we sat on the decking with a few drinks and admired the view. A delicious dinner later, and we were happy to have a chilled evening. Paul clean...

"It's a Castle, Not a Chateau"

The summer of 2018 saw us deciding to head to Switzerland. We finally have our little Honda CRX up to scratch and wanted to get to see a different part of the Alps, having already covered the French Alps a couple of times. So we decided to spent 10 days exploring the beauty that Switzerland has on offer. We planned to stop one night in France on the way there, and one night on the way back, just to break up the drive a bit as Paul does all the driving whilst we're in Europe. The first stop saw us stopping in the region of Lorraine in North-East France. We had found on Booking.com , what looked to be a stunning hotel that appeared to be a castle... When we got there, it was safe to safe we were not disappointed! It really was a true castle and it was stunning in every way. It's called the Hattonchâtel Chateau and wow. Words do not begin to cover how incredible it was. At the front of the castle you are greeted by a full size gate, and to gain entry for the first time you ...
