Wow. Wow. Wow.

After having rested up from our first day of travelling, we left our hotel/castle in France and started the 5 hour drive to our next location. Within a couple of hours we were over the border and officially in Switzerland.

5 hours after leaving France we arrived in Klöntal Valley, Glarus. Having followed a winding road through the trees, we were greeted by a stunning lake backed by mountains. All we could do was stop and say "Wow". And that word got dropped several more times in the couple of days we had here.

We were lucky enough to find that our chosen hotel, Hotel Rhodannenburg, sat on the lakefront. It was an 18th century farmhouse that was converted into a hotel in 1975. The lovely couple that converted it still own it now, and we were lucky enough to get to speak to them a fair bit during our stay.

For the first night we sat on the decking with a few drinks and admired the view. A delicious dinner later, and we were happy to have a chilled evening. Paul cleaned the car and chatted with people, I unfortunately had to retire to bed early after develop an intense headache that I didn't want to ruin our trip.

The next morning we rose and had a lovely continental breakfast before deciding to go for a walk around the lake. One of the owners had told Paul about route we could do that was about a 10 mile round trip so we decided to give it ago.

The walk started out on the edge of the lake, just admiring being so close to the water. There were people out on little boats and in kayaks. I believe the hotel we stayed at were looking at expanding into offering water sports from next summer. which seemed fitting for the beauty of the lake. After a little while it became impossible to walk right next to the water's edge so we went up onto a pathway that led through the trees. Along the way we came across some waterfalls and a couple of recent avalanches. It's truly incredible seeing the effect mother nature can have when you see the remnants of an avalanche.

After a couple of hours of wandering and admiring the view, we made it round to the other side of the lake and found a lovely little pub that did some great food. We indulged in a great meal with a beer before we continued on with our walk.

The evening was spent back at the hotel eating some lovely food, but then we took some beer that we'd bought from a supermarket on our drive the day before, and went back to the lake. The hotel owners has told us we could have fires on the lake front in certain places, so we decided to make the most of the warm evening and do exactly that. We felt the rest was well deserved after racking up a total of 11 miles during the day!

After a lovely evening watching our fire until long after sunset, and drinking a few beers, we headed back to the hotel to get our head down for our last night in Glarus. We had decided we wanted to get up and on the road at a fairly reasonable hour, but there was one last thing we had to do before we left... I had decided I wanted to take a dip in the lake.

At 8am on the Sunday morning, I donned my bikini and we headed down the lake. There was a slipway for the boats that I walked down to get in easily. It made life way easier to get in the lake, but it did mean I could see the hundreds of tadpoles in so was very careful to tiptoe my way in, much to Paul's amusement.
It was pretty flipping cold in the lake as well. So as much as I had planned to go for a swim, I ended up only going in this far as I couldn't face getting any colder. It was an amazing feeling though to be stood in the lake, surrounded by snow-topped mountains in such a stunning location. This was definitely one of my top 10 life moments to date!

In terms of the hotel, it was definitely a beautiful place to stay in an even better location. Once again we used Booking.com for this hotel, and if you use our link to book your own adventure, you'll get back 10% of the cost of your booking. It cost us 376 CHF for the 2 nights, which is about £287. That included breakfast, but dinner was extra. The meals were very reasonably priced depending on what you chose, and you got outstanding quality as well as good quantity. An all round winner in our books.
