A Road Trip with No Car?!

Having come back down the mountain from being at the top of Europe, we headed back to the car to hit the road for our next stop. We had booked ourselves in for a couple of days in a place called Zermatt. When we first looked at this placed, I thought that there was no way Paul was going to want to stay here - they have a complete ban on any fuel burning vehicle. They only have electric powered vehicles. Surprisingly though, we did decide to go - it's kind of a modern age dream to experience no cars allowed in this current society.

What to do with the car whilst we stayed here though? And how do you then get into Zermatt? Well thankfully this was easily answered - there is a town just before Zermatt called Täsch, which has a big train station with trains going straight into Zermatt, and plenty of parking. We found the parking costs at the train station very reasonable, I think it was about 30-40CHF for what was just over 2 days. There are other options available as well - a lot of the hotels in Zermatt have taxi options associated with them and parking that goes alongside that. If you're booking to stay in Zermatt, it is worth talking to your hotel about their options if you're driving. We were quite happy to opt for the train station as this seemed like the easiest option, and with our half fare rail cars, we got discounted rail travel in.

So, having dumped the car, and made sure we had everything we needed to for our 2 nights in Zermatt, we got on the train to hit Zermatt. We had booked through booking.com to stay in Unique Hotel Post (which you can check out their website here). We had to booked for this to be our "treat" hotel, so we were excited to see our room, and this hotel certainly did not disappoint! Having enjoyed the short train ride through the mountains again, we had a short walk up to Unique Hotel Post and when you arrive you are greeted with a warm beautifully open reception area with various bars leading off of it. Our room was on the first floor and had a stunning view of the mountains from our wonderful little balcony.

As we had had quite a busy day before arriving in Zermatt, we decided to have a slow evening. We headed down to the Brown Cow pub, which is one of the 5 bars within the hotel, to have a drink whilst we decided where we wanted to eat. There's the choice of 3 restaurants and the pub to enjoy dinner in, and eventually we settled on Pöstli Stübli for our dinner as they do beautiful cuts of meat that you cook yourself on hot stones. It's a lovely experience and super cosy in the restaurant as it appears to be underground.

We eventually retired to bed to prepare ourselves for an exciting next day - a day that would turn out to be more exciting that I expected!

We started our day in temperatures of about 25 degrees, nice and toasty! We took a lovely stroll through Zermatt heading towards the Matterhorn (a mountain which Switzerland is famous for, and if you've ever had a bar of toblerone chocolate, you'll recognise the mountain!). The buildings in Zermatt are beautifully quaint and typical traditional Swiss type buildings. There's a lovely church in the centre of town and a river running through. Our stroll was leading us towards the gondolas to take us up to the Matterhorn. You'll have to wait to hear about that, as that excursion is worthy of it's own post!
